Kierikki Joins the Megalithic Routes Network
In April 2026, Kierikki, part of the Oulu Museum and Science Centre in northern Finland, joined the European Megalithic Routes network. Located on the banks of the River Iijoki in Oulu, Kierikki is a science centre dedicated to Stone Age life and archaeology, combining research, heritage preservation and public engagement through exhibitions, reconstructed dwellings and hands-on experiences.
Kierikki is situated in the heart of one of Northern Europe’s most remarkable prehistoric landscapes. The region is home to the Northern Megaliths Giant’s Churches (Jätinkirkot), large stone enclosures dating from approximately 3500 to 2000 BC. Found almost exclusively along the coast of Ostrobothnia, these monuments represent a unique form of prehistoric monumental architecture built by northern hunter-gatherer communities.
Despite decades of research, the purpose of the Giant’s Churches remains uncertain. Most of the known sites have never been archaeologically excavated, meaning that many questions concerning their construction and use remain unanswered. During the last twenty years, research has increasingly focused on their astronomical orientations, with several studies suggesting alignments towards significant solar events and calendar dates, such as solstices, equinoxes and traditional cross-quarter days.
Through research, heritage interpretation and educational programmes, Kierikki promotes knowledge of the Giant’s Churches and the Stone Age communities that built them. As a member of the Megalithic Routes network, Kierikki brings a distinctive northern perspective to Europe’s megalithic heritage, highlighting a monument tradition that differs from the better-known megaliths of Europe’s early farming societies.
