Innovations on ancient graves: augmented reality and 3D data
Guided tours on Megalithic Culture Day in Nature and Man
The megalithic tombs of the Stone Age are the oldest monumental structures in Central Europe. To celebrate and inform about them, the “European Megalithic Culture Day” is held annually on the last weekend in April. On this occasion, the Landesmuseum Natur und Mensch Oldenburg invites visitors to a fascinating journey into the past on two guided tours on 30 April – including new insights.
The permanent exhibition at the Landesmuseum Natur und Mensch Oldenburg features a full-size replica of a large stone tomb from the region. Numerous archaeological finds from the period in which they were built tell of their importance for people. At 2 p.m., museum educator and archaeologist Maren Torhoff accompanies families on a discovery tour through the exhibition and introduces the newly designed augmented reality app mega!lith3D. This is a playful way to experience how the huge megalithic tombs were built and how people lived in the Stone Age. Afterwards, participants can try their hand at grinding amber in real life.
For adults, archaeologist Dr. Frank Both offers another guided tour at 3 pm: He will present new findings about the megalithic tombs in Kleinenkneten in the district of Wildeshausen that were obtained as part of the research project “Model Digitisation 3D of Natural and Cultural Assets”. The cooperation project between the Jade University of Applied Sciences and the Landesmuseum Natur und Mensch Oldenburg linked 3D digitisation methods with historical image recordings to reconstruct the excavation situation of the 1930s and, for example, to make statements about burial processes.
Participation in the guided tours costs 3 euros for adults in addition to the museum entrance fee, and 1.50 euros for children from the age of 7. Registration is not required.
