Hunenweg/Hondsrugpad a hiking trail of 325 km through the Netherlands and Germany
The route, which passes many dolmens, among others, connects two UNESCO Global Geoparks; the Hondsrug in the Netherlands and TERRA.vita in Germany. The route from Osnabrück to Meppen in Germany already existed and the path across the Hondsrug in the Netherlands was originally developed back in 2011.
The Hünenweg project.
This new project, to connect the two trails, began in October 2018 and became known as the INTERREG project “UNESCO Global Geopark Cooperation DE/NL. This project should lead to more cross-border cooperation project.
The trail
The new long-distance hiking trail offers hikers more than 325 kilometers through varied landscapes with many geological, archaeological and ecological sights including many dozens of dolmens. The entire route is signposted with yellow/blue directional signs with a distinctive design. The route is divided into 20 sections and also has new information panels with audio commentary, as well as many resting places with benches and suggestions for restaurants and overnight accommodations.

The 20 sections vary in length between 10 and 24 kilometers, and more detailed information is available (in Dutch and German) at www.huenenweg.com. There is also an accompanying app and a printed booklet describing the route.
