European Day of Megalithic Culture, April 28
Sunday 28 April is the European Day of Megalithic Culture organised by our partner network Megalithic Routes. This day, people all over Europe dwell on Megalithic structures such as Stonehenge, Carnac, menhirs and dolmen. Like dolmens, these are megalithic monuments. All of them have their own story, which we pay extra attention to on this day with a varied programme that offers you as a visitor more insights into the history of these stone structures.
Join a guided walk
Guide Gerrit Eggink will take you on a walk along various large boulders in Borger. He will tell you how the boulders ended up in Drenthe, why they are so important and what our ancestors did with them. In the school holidays, you can join Gerrit for a walk (see the dates at the bottom of this page). Participation in this activity is free of charge.

Excursion to the dolmens of Bronneger
The landscape of Drenthe is littered with archaeological monuments, such as dolmens and burial mounds. All have left their mark. Close to the Hunebedcentrum you will find D27, the largest hunebed in the Netherlands… but a stone’s throw from the museum you can see more hunebedden.
On this excursion, you will join a discovery tour of the hunebeds of Bronneger, and learn about the people who built these megalithic (stone) monuments, the Funnel Beaker Culture. It was a people who left their mark not only in the Netherlands but widespread throughout Europe.
